2021 Impact Report

Even though we are nearing the end of 2022, we’d still like to continue celebrating everything that happened in 2021. We’ll be posting a few parts of our 2021 impact report for those who haven’t read it yet. We hope you enjoy reading and hearing about our ministry.

Staff Perspectives: Social Work

Geng

I encountered questions from students that challenged my masculinity and fatherhood. Such as, what if my son was like them? or what if my son was to have a boyfriend? Would I be angry? How would I feel?

These questions from the students made me understand what they had to go through in the past, especially with their fathers and family members. For me, as a man and as a father and in my role with them, I have to learn how to be a kind, healthy, male figure who sets a good example for them and empower them. And my learning continues every day. Being able to spend time with the students makes me love and enjoy what I’m doing. Because being a part of the students’ lives and seeing their lives change for the better makes me confident in what we do this work for.

As for the team, I feel that we are a good team. Although there are some limitations, we can still support each other. The strength of our team is that we all want to see the lives of our students and those who come to receive our services have a better life.

We had a theme for the students last quarter of 2021 which was “Transformation”, and it became 10 Transformation classes. The topics were focused on how they could deal with life that is not easy and always changes. We talked a lot about knowing oneself and not being afraid of change.

Students learned from a butterfly’s life cycle that it started as a caterpillar and had to go through a long process before it became the most wonderful and beautiful creature. Even though the students learned that change can be scary and require a lot of courage, one student wrote in his reflection that “I like change and I am excited for changes. That’s why I came to Dton Naam”.

I am so proud of all the students for how they learned and they were aware that they are in the process of becoming and having a more meaningful and beautiful life. They know more about themselves, what they want for their lives, and what changes are required for them to reach their dreams and goals.
